The 5 Other Items Every Girl Needs in Her Closet

You’ve heard it before. Every girl needs a little black dress, dark denim dressy jeans, a well-fitting blazer, blah, blah, blah. I don’t want to waste your time telling you what you already know, so let’s talk about five items that always seem to be missing from those lists. They may seem too simple to be necessities or not just your cup of tea, but these pieces can help bridge many wardrobe gaps and can be styled in an infinite number of ways.

1. Sheer Maxi Skirt. A one of the biggest trends of 2011, I’m a large proponent of giving your sheer maxi skirt a permanent place in your closet and in your heart. Why: The long length and sheer material can lend itself to formal events, but if styled correctly can also be completely casual. Opt for one with no attached lining because it can look like a totally different skirt depending on what you layer under it – a full length skirt for a more put together look, a mini for a more casual look, or even a pair of denim shorts (cue the latest Free People catalog) for a music festival look. You can even try a patterned skirt. Alternatively: If you don’t like the floor length look, a sheer midi can do the trick too.2. Light Military Jacket. Believe it or not, nothing gets more play in my closet than my military jacket. Why: It’s that moment when you’re about to head out the door for a coffee date with some girlfriend and you realized you’re too dressed up. You were going for ladylike but ended up first lady (love you, Mrs. O. but you know what I mean).  Throw this piece on to tone down the look in a most fashion-forward manner. Layer it under a blazer for just a peek, or you can even button it up, roll up the sleeves, and belt it to pretend it’s a shirt. Alternatively: There’s no alternative for this sweet piece.

3. Plaid shirt. An easy find, a plaid shirt is an easy way to update your look and it transcends all seasons and trends. Why: This simple, never-going-away pattern is great for pattern mixing when paired with a floral skirt but is equally great with a a tweed coat.  The collar and buttons lend themselves to layering under and over other items. In neutral colors, plaid will go a long way in your wardrobe, but a fun red or orange plaid packs some punch. Alternatively: If plaid is too lumberjack-meets-Kurt-Cobain for you, a classic gingham can work to the same effect.

4. Blue Button Up: You don’t already own this? Why: How many tops can you wear for work and play? This staple goes either way. You can giggle in glee when you realize you’re wearing the same shirt you wore to an interview at a pumpkin patch. Alternatively: A gray button up has almost the same effect, though I think no color lends itself 50/50 like a nice light blue.5. Statement necklace. Whether a choker or a long strand pendant (ideally one of each), a statement necklace of some sort is a must-have for every lady. Why: To dress up the aforementioned little black dress, dark denim jeans, the button up, and even the military jacket and plaid shirt. A good statement necklace can be the deciding factor of what you want your outfit to say. It can be worn more often than you think, so be sure to get one that you are comfortable wearing forever, all the time. Call it your signature. Alternatively: Not a necklace person? The right chandelier earrings can do this too!

Mod Nods and Mini Dresses

Seriously speaking, there’s little way to better shine than in a mini dress with some embedded sparkle. A luminous frock with a bit of glitz is just one of my favorites heading to all Crossroads stores* as we speak. In the next few days, watch out for delicate, darling mini dresses, but also coats and capes, drapey tunics, mod-inspired mini skirts, and sequin-covered tops for good measure. Which is your favorite piece?

Speaking of sparkly stuff, we’re giving this necklace away on Monday. Why? Because we appreciate you! Through this week, comment on any and as many blog posts as you want and you’ll be entered to win. The more you comment, the more chances you have to be the randomly selected winner.

3 Ways to Wear: Blazers

blazer alexa chung style

When you think about polishing off an outfit, your mind normally skips to shoes or other accessories, right? I know mine does. But there are so many wardrobe staples that don’t just go in an outfit, but complete a whole look. So with spring coming soon (hopefully!), here’s to one of the best light jackets out there – the blazer!

The first outfit is all about looking relaxed and stylish at the same time. The new season is bringing looser pants and plenty of slouchy tops – not to mention a menswear-for-women trend – so a snug blazer is the perfect way to make sure you’re tying it all together. Bonus points for navy ones that look nautical-chic.

Next up, the school-girl vibe is a classic, but we don’t actually want to look like a school girl. Thankfully a preppy outfit is still doable with an adorable full skirt and a tee instead of a button-up. Topped with a blazer and you’re off to a very smart start that isn’t too girly.

Lastly…how much do I love this model’s outfit? Probably too much. Without the blazer you’ve got an average everyday look: jeans, t-shirt and denim shirt. With the blazer and rolled up sleeves, suddenly you’re frolicking down the line between quirky, cute and still casual. And yes, she’s frolicking! What’s not to like?

If you’ve got a fave, always let us know! Suggestions of your own are welcome too. After all, I think I want an excuse to go shopping. ;)

Closet Challenge: 1 Dress, 5 Days

costa mesa crossroads dress

If you live in Costa Mesa, chances are you recognize Emma as our awesome store manager. You’d also know that her style is off the charts and working at Crossroads definitely encourages it. After all, what good is a discount if you don’t use it, right? ;)

But the other thing that all buy-sell-traders know is that more isn’t always more. It feels great to have a clean closet filled with treasures rather than thoughts of, “Man, I never got around to returning that…”

So in the spirit of the New Year and new looks, Emma challenged herself to wear one dress for five days. And yes, still look as amazing as always.

If it isn’t obvious from the pictures, she certainly pulled it off. And – could it be any other way? Everything came from Crossroads! Starting with the T-Bags jersey dress that was only $16.50. After that, using belts and experimenting with layering were essential. Tops don’t just have to go over, they can go under too! Most importantly, being adventurous and combining old things in new ways helped Emma turn one basic dress into five totally different outfits.

It’s a tough challenge but it’ll push your style-brain into creative overdrive. We hope you feel inspired to remix some pieces you love!

3 Ways to Wear: Trench Coats

Beloved by international spies and fashion insiders alike, the trench coat never goes away. So here’s “3 Ways to Wear” this versatile wardrobe staple:

First, slide on a pair of pretty flats with a dress – any dress! Grab a beret on your way out if you’re feeling really romantic, but never doubt the timeless, understated elegance of a trench coat. Audrey Hepburn famously wore one in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and that’s just the top of the list of classic movie-moments starring a trench coat.

Next, you can personalize your trench. Since standard styles are light on hardware and usually come in classic colors like tan and navy, there’s no need to be shy: Mary Kate Olsen cinches hers with a plain leather belt, but it definitely grabs your eye. So experiment! Bright, embellished, even silk scarves – anything could go with a trench as long as you don’t go overboard with the rest of your outfit.

Lastly…aren’t you a little tired of motorcycle jackets? Trench coats started as military coats, so they’ll always have a touch of tomboy flare. Roll up the sleeves, never button it, and wear with your other downtown-casual favorites like skinny jeans, slouchy tops, and tough boots. You’ll be channeling fashion’s current obsession with classics and minimalism, without losing an ounce of cool.

Oh, and if you’re a guy: Just wear one, please? Because #2 on that list of movie-moments has got to be Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.

3 Ways to Wear: Velvet

velvet jessica alba kate walsh kim kardashian

Are sequins too loud for you? What about some luxurious luster? Hello, velvet.

It’s a classic holiday fabric: Warm, heavy, shiny, and yes, sometimes it reminds you of a horrible dress you were forced to wear when you were a kid. But things have changed! And since it’s such a big winter trend, I think it’s time to get back in touch with velvet.

So back to that awful Christmas dress you might have worn for a family portrait…We do not support that. No lace collars, no frills. Just a deep, jewel-tone and a great fit. Jessica Alba has been wearing a few velvet dresses lately and they always command attention with their intense texture and shine. What else do you need besides a gorgeous pair of heels?

Next up, Kim Kardashian totally nails modern velvet: You don’t need a lot to look dressed up. Her jacket has a velvet trim and her leggings are velvet too. The added glow is perfect for evening: There’s no doubt she’s ready to go out, even paired with a neutral t-shirt and plain black pumps.

Lastly, the classic black velvet blazer. It can instantly glamorize a t-shirt and jeans, but Kate Walsh takes it up a notch with her accessories. Personally, I think the word “svelte” is under-used and a velvet blazer could definitely solve that problem. Think of it as an incredibly feminine version of a tuxedo.

Regardless of whether you changed your mind about velvet or not – tell us your thoughts! We’re wishing you an incredibly awesome holiday weekend and we’ll see you here on Monday when we award another $25 gift certificate.

sneak peek: draped jackets

draped asymmetric zipper jacket

If your fall wardrobe needs an update, there’s no better place to start than with a jacket.

You’re going to wear it practically all the time and they don’t call it outerwear for nothing – so why not get add some modern appeal to your most visible piece? Big, draped collars equal a bit of drama and high-fashion, but in an everyday way you can put on over just about any outfit. The tan jacket hangs beautifully and the large collar on the black zip-up looks great over the shoulders or open – both $25 and totally effortless. Though we do applaud the time and craziness involved, no Lady Gaga meat-dresses here, thanks.

These two styles are going to be in all stores* this week so leave a comment if you love ‘em: Our weekly $25 gift certificate giveaway is going strong and if your comment is the next winner, one of these jackets could be yours for just the cost of your two cents. :)

Sneak Peek: Texture

drape metallic top faux fur dress

Dressing up for fall is about to get a lot more fun and femme. These are the latest items hitting all stores* by the end of the week and they’re going to make you feel as good as you look.

The silky metallic top is a simple solution for a day-to-night outfit. It’s cut long, lean, and universally flattering with soft, draped tiers. And it’s almost too convenient how good it looks paired with the faux suede cropped jacket.

Or if you’re feeling old-school glamor for fall, make sure you try on the faux fur trimmed dress. It’s plenty warm and cozy on its own, but having a hint of fur peeking out from a coat will also be tres chic.

And don’t forget to let us know which one – or more – is your favorite with a comment!
