How to Dress Up or Dress Down a Little Black Dress

Valentine’s day is soon to be upon us and you know what that means – general schmoozing for the couples, girls night out for the single ladies (put your hands up!), San Francisco pillow fight for the very cool, and a new outfit perhaps? We can never say no! This V-Day, skip the snooze-fest that occurs with pink dresses; long live the little black dress, we say. If you have one already, cool, and if not, it’s a great investment to make because you can wear it to everything, forever…sort of like that diamond that he ought to give you. Here’s how:

1. With a statement necklace. Another investment you can keep forever, every lady needs at least one signature statement necklace. The black dress simply serves as its base, and the more statement necklaces you have, the more you can wear the dress without anyone being the wiser.

2. With bold shoes. With these killer shoes on your feet and that killer necklace on your neck, you will warrant full body scans from your date in more ways than one. Gorgeous and stylish? He’s a lucky man.3. With red and pink for V-Day! You can still put some red and/or pink into your outfit by accessorizing with your shoes, purse, or jewelry…and again, these pieces provide way more future wearing-power than a body-con red dress. You might call them investment pieces themselves.

4. With a cropped jacket. For a more formal look, put a cropped jacket over that little black dress so as not to overwhelm its your shape. They say black is flattering and they have been been proven correct. Ask any woman who owns a great LBD.

5. Worn casually. Look at all the tricks the LBD can do! It glams you up and then it dresses you down for lunch – I mean this could even be the very next day if you rage that hard. Wear it with a long low-key blazer and flats instead of heels. For my casual outfit, I went for a sexy Annie Hall look, which would typically be an oxymoron if it weren’t for this LBD. Boggle his mind by looking better in his blazer than he does.

6. Worn with black, black, and black. You don’t have to be touched by the color fairy if you don’t want to. Go black all the way if you want, just add some interesting details by playing on subtle prints, fabrics, and textures.

7. Against the LBD? Allow me to introduce the Little Black Separates. This tip is sort of cheating, but it’s still something you deserve to know. If you don’t have one and don’t want one, a well-paired top and skirt can almost give you the LBD effect too. Almost.

8. In your own style. If you don’t own one, find the right shape, cut and length for you…ideally, one you’ll be comfortable with wearing more than once. At the same time, choose a style that suits your personality. If you dig the Duchess look, well cool, but if you’d rather be a modern Joan Jett than Kate Middleton, there’s a LBD out there for you too.
