Interview: Freddy of Blue Perk

Sometimes the things you see in magazines aren’t just unattainable…they also don’t necessarily seem wearable for most of us. Luckily, bloggers have kind of played the middleman role over the last few years, showing us how to take tricky trends and have them make sense not to models and editors, but to us.

Magazines for men are no different, and though guys seemed to have been left out of the blogger equation for a long time, we’re totally stoked to see some breaking into the industry, breaking boundaries in fashion and creating a stylish-guy phenomenon. And that’s where our new friend Freddy of the menswear blog Blue Perk comes in.

Originally from Texas, but now based in New York, Freddy’s style effortlessly walks the line between dapper refinement and urban-cool. A concrete catwalk character and certainly one to look towards for style inspiration, he talked to us about the top three best moments in his life and where he thinks blogging is going from here.  Read on and meet on below.

freddy6freddy4What was the last movie you saw?

My Week With Marilyn; I have always admired her presence and style.

Favorite place for a bite, ice cream, and a drink in New York?

Bite: Clinton St. Baking Co. Their pancakes are to DIE for, and their chicken and waffles might as well be heaven on a plate.

Ice Cream: Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. During the summer I can not go a week without a Sunday Monday or a Salty Pimp.

Drink: Phoenix in the East Village on a Friday is typically my favorite watering hole, for dancing and drink specials.

I feel like everyone has a first fashion memory, like when your mom got you your first pair of light up sneakers, etc. What is yours?

My first fashion memory is wearing a sky blue three piece suit and never wanting to wear anything else. I grew up on 10 acres of land in southern Texas and would run around with my sisters in my favorite suit until I was too big to wear it.

Tell us about three great moments in your life.

1. Being accepted to F.I.T. and finally being able to leave Texas for a big city I’d longed for since childhood.

2. Spending three uninterrupted weeks of vacation in Hawaii during the freezing New York winter in January.

3. Being selected by Tumblr to officially be a NYFW Fall 13′ correspondent in their blogger program.

Where do you live and where are you from?

I currently live in the Lower East Side neighborhood of New York City and am originally from a small town in southern Texas called Robstown.

What does the name of your blog mean and where did it come from?

My blog name came from two of my key traits: blue is my favorite color and I have an upbeat perky (aka cheerful) personality. Simply meaning Blue Perk is a menswear destination for cheerful clothing inspiration.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as dressed up with a casual vibe, while always paying attention to detail and color coordination.

When did you start blogging and how did you get into it?

I started my blog during the summer of 2011 in Texas after my first year at F.I.T. to stay proactive while away from New York.  I got into blogging by always seeing my ex-boyfriend on Tumblr and always having had an interest for personal style. With so much free time, I experimented with documenting my outfits and slowly built my presence once I got back to New York. Quickly learning from experiences along the way have lead to what Blue Perk is now.

The personal style blogging world is definitely controlled by women, at least at this time. Why do you think that is, and do you think it’s changing?

Women are honestly my first inspiration for my blog;I knew a handful and thought they shouldn’t have all the fun. The dominance of women has been prevalent because girls like to look at others girls, and well, love to shop a lot more than men. Over the course of the past two years, there has been an increasing trend of men interested in menswear and how to step up their style. With men increasingly interested in menswear, there has been a large rise in guys doing personal style blogs, and it’s definitely changing the balance on who is dominant in personal style blogging.

The world seems to slowly be becoming more stylish. Do you think bloggers have anything to do with this?

With a more stylish world there has to be more influencers; bloggers are a large presence in setting trends and how others style themselves. We are filling the gaps between runway and magazines, to actually being able to put together everyday outfits with a stylish edge.
