Interview: La Vagabond Dame

We all want to claim we’re worldly wanderers, but the truth is most of us don’t get outside of the box very often.

But then there is Natalie, the premier vagabond lady when it comes to location and style. A San Francisco native, Natalie and I chatted via email about her move to LA while she was in New York, and her style, as detailed on her blog, is equally boundless. Before she’s off again, catch up with Natalie in this exclusive interview we conducted across states…and when you’re ready for more, follow Natalie through adventures to come on her blog, La Vagabond Dame.

How old are you and where are you from?

I am 18 years old, and I am from San Francisco.

What’s your typical morning routine?

My typical morning routine entails tuning to Lana del Rey on Pandora and making myself a cup of tea. Then I lounge around in my underwear until I decide what I want to wear for the day.

What’s in your purse right now?

A metro card for the NYC subways, my credit card, aviator sunglasses, a disposable camera, Nars “Heat Wave” matte lipstick, eyeliner, a compact mirror and a couple twenty dollar bills.

When did you start your blog and why? I love the name – where did it come from?

I started La Vagabond Dame in the beginning of 2010 at the age of 15. It originally was a dumping ground for my teen angst and a place to post inspirational photos. When I discovered what “fashion blogging” was half a year later, I was intrigued and gradually my blog’s content began to lean more toward fashion. La Vagabond Dame translates to “The Vagabond Lady,” a play on mixing French and English. With a thirst for travel and creativity, I’m not one to settle in one place. The same applies to my personal style. I am always taking in new inspiration and styles and incorporating it into my daily looks.

We’re losing you to LA soon – Oh no! Why are you moving?

I will be going to school in Los Angeles and pursuing side projects.

What was it like being the most stylish person in your high school?

I received a lot of recognition for my personal style and many friends came to me for fashion advice. It’s flattering to know that my peers are all very supportive of what I do and regard me as an inspiration and a muse.

Have you always loved fashion? How did you get into it?

I’ve always loved dressing up and having freedom to decide what to wear. What I love most about fashion is the possibility of feeling like a completely new person when wearing certain attire.

How would you describe your style?

Feminine rock n’ roll elegance.

What is your signature look?

Red lips, stacks of gold jewelry and sky-high platforms and hems.

Who are your style icons?

Miroslava Duma, Alexa Chung, 60’s It girls and Dree Hemingway.

What are your daily reads, fashion and otherwise?

The Coveteur, Refinery 29, Ernest Hemingway, Vogue Magazine and my personal favorite style blogs.

Do you shop at Crossroads? If so, what is your favorite find?

I love shopping at Crossroads. So far my favorite find is the leopard dress from the Rodarte x Target collection. I missed out on that collaboration so I was happy to get my little hands on that for twenty-five bones!

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Happily graduated from college and starting a new chapter of life in New York City.

What’s your life motto?

Don’t take life or fashion too seriously.

Thank you for your time, Natalie!
