Blog: Crossroads Style

Behind the Scenes at LuckyFABB West

If you follow us on Twitter or Instagram, you know we had a pretty amazing Monday (how many people can say that, huh?). LuckyFABB, the fashion and beauty blogger conference put on by Lucky Magazine, returned for the third time and this time took over Los Angeles. We brunched with our blogger friends on Sunday in beautiful Santa Monica, and on Monday we sat through amazing panels of some of fashion’s most distinguished figures  – such as Zac Posen, Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power of Who What Wear, Geri Hirsch of Because I’m Addicted and  Jeff Rudes of J Brand. We also enjoyed the insights of other speakers such as Jessica Alba, Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster!), Elizabeth Banks and Randi Zuckerberg, all while hanging out with some  of our old and new blogger friends. If you still can’t tell how much fun we had, a picture is worth a thousand words…and we have lots of them.

Many thanks to the event sponsors including Zappos, Miss Me,  Olay, CoverGirl, Venus, Michael Stars, Jelly Pop, Tacori and LeSportSac.

Trendspotting: Bow-Ties

Dapper dudes are certainly having a moment, and we couldn’t be more pleased to be reporting on it. The latest trend we see in this endless game of I Spy is men in bow-ties. While we’d accept this from our favorite fashion-forward men’s magazines, it’s extremely refreshing to see such prim necklines pop up on street style blogs and even on some well-loved celebrities (that’s Kanye and David Beckham down there if you didn’t recognize them!). The key to wearing them? The right color for you and a dash of confidence. Pattern mixing for the brave and plain for the more refined look, we say. The name of the game is gentleman, and we’d take it over an afternoon of cargo shorts any day.

One Denim Button-Up, Five Ways

I believe in red lipstick, super glue and denim button-ups. Of all the things in the world that can fail you (examples include your colorist and your iPhone battery), a denim shirt isn’t one of them. We’ve been taking the denim shirt as a given for a long time now, but sometimes a quick refresher course is in order…you know, to make sure your blue jean baby isn’t getting old, so to speak.  Our Evanston team decided to take on the challenge, showing you five different ways to remix the same denim shirt. Clearly, many miles can come out of this $11 Old Navy top, and our team didn’t leave any room for error. Scroll on, get inspired and chime in.

1. Tie it up. Christina starts the show off by tying the button-up and baring some springtime midriff. Paired with some white jeans and studded loafers, the look says clean, collected and cutting edge.

ON CHRISTINA: Dylan & George pants sz 26 $18.50, Wanted shoes Sz 6 ½ $32.50, Old Navy denim shirt sz S $11

2. As a dress. Is your denim tunic long enough to double as a dress? Then define your waist with a belt and skip the pants like Colleen below. If you’re wary of showing that much skin, leggings or tights can be your savior while you flirt away  in your new denim frock.ON COLLEEN: J.Crew belt sz S $16.50, Bottega Veneta shoes sz 38 ½ $40, New Crossroads earrings $10.50, Furla purse $30, Old Navy denim shirt sz S $11

3. Denim on denim. Is that you Alexa Chung? The key to rocking denim on denim is to pair two distinct blue shades instead of going for an all-over monochrome. Colleen wins us over by putting the Old Navy button-up with a pair of dark denim skinnies by J Brand. She seals the deal by amplifying her blues with some bright pumps.ON COLLEEN: J Brand jeans sz 8 $27.50, Hipwear belt sz L $7, New Crossroads necklace $16.50, J.Crew shoes sz 9 $20, Old Navy denim shirt sz S $11

4. Leave it open. For a casual weekender look, toss your denim button-up over another shirt and go. In a very tongue-and-cheek manner, Christina plays it casual cool by wearing a girly lace skirt under the shirt, and then pulls the whole thing together with a slim belt. The end result is casual but refined, and who doesn’t love mixology?ON CHRISTINA: J.Crew skirt sz 00 $35, H&M  belt sz S $6, Forever 21 shoes sz 6 $14, Old Navy denim shirt sz S $11

5. With a sleek skirt. Your denim shirt can be made office ready in no time. Like magic, that weekend look transforms by buttoning the shirt up and wearing it tucked into a sleek pencil skirt. Colleen dares to do this  with a denim skirt for another denim-on-denim outfit, but you could also try it with a pencil skirt in a prim print or a plain color.ON COLLEEN: Corpus skirt sz 10 $20, New Crossroads necklace $25, Kensie Girl shoes sz 9 $14, Old Navy denim shirt sz S $11

Girl Crush: Aline Weber

Cheekbones? Check. It takes a great face and long lengths to be a model, but walking the catwalks doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll shine brightly on the sidewalk too. One girl who manages to walk both lines is Aline Weber, a 23-year-old Brazilian model who can call Balenciaga, H&M and Calvin Klein past clients. Needless to say, the beauty has luxury fashion houses and street style homepages on lock down. Her style is an eclectic mix of high and low, rock and refined – just like her resume. She likes a good neon tweed jacket, but she clearly can’t keep from a pair of good jeans either. Though that crochet skirt is enough to make her crush-worthy in our book, we certainly wouldn’t mind creeping into Aline’s closet for a quick looksie!

So what do you think? Check out some of Aline’s looks below and step onto the soap box in the comments because you know we want to hear from you.

Coachella Digital Diary

Are you tired of hearing about Coachella yet? When the festival management added another weekend to the festival this year, they extended the amount of time you’d have to listen to the details, but they also extended the invitation to thousands more people than previously possible.

I decided I was going a few weeks ago almost on a whim. A crappy motel was booked and a ride share was reserved. What ensued last weekend was a crazy whirlwind filled with music, pool parties, sweat, achy feet, new friends, sketchy taxi rides, fast food and epic fun. I’m not saying this to make you jealous. I’m saying this to let you know that you were sincerely missed! If you’ve never attended Coachella before, you owe it to yourself to come one day. Don’t believe the hype about all the hype – despite the fact that a group of celebrities have crashed the party (ahem, David Hasselhoff), the festival is still good grassroots fun with attendees coming from as far as Australia, France, the UK and Canada. It’s amazing to see how nice people are to each other during those three days. There’s a beautiful we’re-all-in-this-together feeling that resides on the Empire Polo Field during Coachella.

Sappiness aside, we can (almost) promise that this will be the last mention of Coachella on this blog until next year. Below you can follow my Instagram-filled journey, along with a few of my favorite personal tweets from the weekend.

Venice Beach, 3:00 a.m. Good morning. So totally necessary right now. #Coachella day 1 on 3 hours of sleep

If there isn’t a Tupac hologram at #Coachella this weekend I want my money back

I don’t care if you’re at #Coachella, it’s never okay to wear a fanny pack #notokay

David Hasselhoff

“Why would someone call you and try to have a conversation during Coachella? Saying ‘I’m at Coachella’ is like saying ‘I’m in another country.’ It’s just understood.”

“Where is your roommate?” “I keep telling her to come down and hang at the pool, but she’s just sitting in our motel room, napping and making raver bracelets.”

All #Coachella days start with a trip to Denny’s

Only half way through #Coachella and I’ve developed a pretty gnarly tan

Party bus! State Farm giving free lifts to Coachella-goers, whoa! #StateFarm

“When you’re dehydrated, water tastes like sweet, sweet honey.” -My friend Sam

#Coachella might just be the closest we’ve ever come to utopia. I want to live in this festival forever.
If they can make a freaking Tupac hologram, they can do anything #Coachella #CanTheyAutotuneLivePreformances?

The award for best campsite goes to these dudes!

Riding in style, the State Farm golf cart gave us a lift from the party bus drop off to the main festival entrance. So #legit.

“This isn’t a tan line, it’s a dirt line.” -Me to a friend commenting on the “tan line” on my feet

By the end of day 3 Coachella you start to think this is your life. Yeah I pool party, make friends, and watch live music everyday #sowhat. Going to miss this place…
Just saw a dude with a fresh “You only live once ” tattoo. #yolo I guess…2:30 a.m., the Coachella-goers at my motel congratulate the ones that just arrived back for completing Coachella. Really been enjoying the #CoachellaComradery I’ve experienced here. So cute.

Items of the Week: Berkeley Crossroads

Bare legs, cuffed pants and Jack by BB Dakota – three things we like. Today our Berkeley staff ups the ante by showing you some fresh stems…sans tights! With Coachella officially over and April wrapping up as we speak, we’re looking ahead and we have just one thing on our minds – summer! It’ll be here faster than you can say relativistic-astrophysics-and-cosmology-finals. While we wait we will wishfully look on to short shorts, short skirts, short dresses, crop tops and short-talls (kidding!) to liven up our wardrobes. There are milk shakes to be had, flowering hilltops to hike and a Crossroads where you can cop some of the above in awesome recycled fashion. We’re enjoying cruising to California’s golden months.

ON JADE: Jack by BB Dakota dress size M $22.50, BCBGeneration denim vest size XS $22.50, BCBGirls shoes size 7 $27.50, New necklace $18
ON JASON: All Saints shirt size M $35.00, Levi’s pants size 28″x30L $16.50,  Levi’s shoes size 8 1/2 $22.50

Trendspotting: Sport Chic

Work out clothes? Hardly. So far this season, we’ve delved into pastels, re-invented florals and donned the umbrella skirt. The girly girl reigns supreme and gosh how we’ve missed her. But even though we’re nowhere near done with looking like modern versions of Princess Peach, the sport chic look has found its way onto our radars and perhaps into our hearts. Track jackets, sneakers, athletic tees, school sweatshirts and varsity jackets are being sported from Milan to New York, The Locals to Jak & Jil.

Before you run, believe me, there is a stylish way to wear these wears without breaking a sweat. While you could go the 90′s hip hop route if you’d like, fashionable men and women are opting to mix just one athletic item, often in a streamlined and tailored cut, with other sleek pieces such as pencil skirts, blazers, trousers and button-ups. The result is straight street chic – comfortable and slightly edgy, a healthy mix of classic and modern. The fact that I can wear my sneakers during New York Fashion Week is all the convincing I need…so what about you? Are you game?

Meet the Staff of Santa Monica Crossroads

If you’ve been following this blog, I don’t think it’s necessary to go into great detail about why our staff is awesome. I mean, take a look at these photos! The phrase “I know it when I see it” comes to mind – no further explanation necessary.

But since we wouldn’t just leave you hanging (and if amazing outfits aren’t an indicator), today we introduce Morgan, Kayla, Alli and Gil from Santa Monica Crossroads. If you ever experienced exceptional customer service in our store or had a nice chat with a member of our staff, read on below to know that they’re just as friendly behind the scenes as they are with their customers. They get fashion inspiration from music videos,  like rocker chic and die over Wildfox. To put it as People Magazine would…they’re just like you!

How would you describe your style?

Morgan: I would describe my style as rocker chic. It’s very 80′s, early 90′s inspired. I love lace, leopard print and velvet and I love pairing any of those with a pair of high waist denim shorts.

What are some of your favorite fashion labels that you’ve seen come into Crossroads?

Kayla: I get so excited whenever I see All Saints, Wildfox, and J.Crew come into the store!!

What do you like most about working at Crossroads?

Alli: I love building relationships with customers and hearing the stories behind pieces of clothing from sellers.

What was your inspiration for this outfit?

Gil: When I saw Rihanna’s playful 90′s punk look in the music video for “We Found Love” I instantly fell in love! Mixing Rihanna’s distinct vintage look in the video with my own girly flare, some turquoise jewelry, and chunky heels (to satisfy my obsession with Jeffrey Campbell) makes for one fabulously funky outfit!
