March 9th, 2017 by Jennifer Beile 5 Celebrity Women Who Use Their Influence for Social Change

International Women’s Day was yesterday, but we should come together to celebrate the spirit and achievement of women everyday, not just once a year. In that spirit, I’ve highlighted some of the high-profile female celebrities that use their public influence and time to better the lives of others. Many celebrities give back regularly by donating money, I’m but focusing on those involved in the physical and social work it takes to make a difference. Keep reading for five celebrity women who are using their influence for good!

Oprah Winfrey

influence

Oprah Winfrey is not only the queen of media and one of the richest people in the world, she is also a philanthropist that focuses on education, often donating tens of millions of her own money to charity. She has established her own charity organizations, Oprah’s Angel Network and The Oprah Winfrey Foundation. She also routinely donates time and money to other organizations and publicly promotes issues that otherwise struggle with gaining attention. She’s even received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work!

Angelina Jolie

influence

A list of celebrity social influencers would not be complete without Angelina Jolie. Jolie is an outspoken activist who routinely goes on field missions and raises awareness about refugees, war-torn countries, and women’s and children’s rights. Jolie is involved in several goodwill organizations, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Kids in Need of Defense, and the Council on Foreign Relations. She is truly an example of one using their good fortune to help those in need.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

South African native Charlize Theron focuses her humanitarian efforts on those suffering from HIV/AIDs with the support of her organization The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. Theron is also outspoken about preventing and stopping violence against women and girls. She was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2008.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and works to promote education for girls. In 2014, she launched HeForShe, a campaign for gender equality. Watson is so adamant about women’s rights and gender equality that she started a feminist book club, Our Shared Shelf, to help further promote these ideas across the world.

Chrissy Turlington

Chrissy Turlington

Supermodel and humanitarian Chrissy Turlington is a huge advocate for maternal health. After suffering from complications from her own pregnancy, she got involved and began helping underprivileged mothers have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. Her efforts include providing staff training to clinics with little resources. Turlington also directed a documentary in 2010 called No Woman, No Cry, which profiles the status of maternal health around the world.

Of course, there are many more female celebrities—and women just like you and me—who are actively involved in trying to better the lives of those less fortunate. Who inspires you in your daily life to make the world a better place?
