Trends come and go in waves; some are modernized, revamped, and welcomed back with open arms, while others take some time to be accepted and embraced. Lately, I’ve seen some surprising statement trends slowly making their way back into stores and editorials—and they have me scratching my head a bit. Not one to judge, I am diving in and rounding up a few of the latest unexpected trends to share with our Crossroads readers.
You read that right—the hair tie of your childhood has snuck into your adult life, and you’ll more than likely be seeing it in stores again. If you’re tempted to grab a few out of nostalgia, you won’t be the first or the last. To easily incorporate it into your modern wardrobe, keep it in the same color family as your outfit’s, or wear a neutral color like white on your wrist as a fun accessory.
Denim Maxi Skirts:
The bane of my existence growing up in the ’80s and ’90s: the denim maxi skirt. We saw the return of denim mini and midi skirts this past year, so it was only inevitable that we would be seeing the maxi come back as well. I will admit that I was not a fan of its original run, but today’s cuts have been updated, and I can’t say that I’m mad about it. Details like frayed edges, layers, and high slits have really revamped the denim maxi.
Dresses Over Pants:
I rocked this look in high school and after seeing photos of myself years later, I was so happy that this was not a trend anymore… until now. This early 2000s look typically consists of a mini dress—usually with embellishments like ruffled layers—worn over low-rise flared denim. Today’s modern take on a dress-and-pants combo is a big improvement. Try a button-down maxi dress fastened a quarter of the way over high-waisted distressed denim, or a sheer dress with high slits over a slim pant.
I’ve been surprised to see shoes with fur accents taking over as much as they have. I didn’t think they were a practical shoe choice for the everyday women, but this is one surprising trend that I am definitely loving. Who says your shoe choice needs to be practical, anyway? Fur-accented mules, loafers, and heels add a bit of excitement and fun to your outfit.
