June 14th, 2018 by Jennifer Beile Why Busy Philipps’ New Talk Show Is So Important

Busy Philipps

My initial reaction to hearing that Busy Philipps is joining the late night scene with Busy Tonight—airing on E! this summer—was ‘Why hasn’t this happened sooner?’ My second reaction was ‘How did I not know how badly I wanted this?’ Unfiltered, unedited, raw, and real, Philipps is an obvious perfect fit for a late night show host!

There isn’t much information available about the show just yet, but Philipps did spill a few details on her podcast We’re No Doctors with co-host Steve Agee. The show will begin airing bi-weekly episodes that will include behind-the-scenes peeks into her Instagram Stories (with a LEKfit appearance, no doubt!) and plenty of celebrity guests and pop culture commentary.

This sounds like a pretty typical formula for late night shows, so why is the announcement of Busy Philipps’s talk show so important? Busy Philipps started as an actress and was eventually able to successfully take control of her own image—a rare feat. She’s created a brand (of herself) via Instagram and Twitter, and now she’s joining the exclusive ranks of female talk show hosts in a male-dominated niche. Currently, there are only four women hosting their own late night shows, including: TBS’s Samantha Bee, BET’s Robin Thede, Hulu’s Sarah Silverman, and Netflix’s Michelle Wolfe. For comparison, there are over fifteen late night shows hosted by men.

Feeling a lack of passion and a shortage of opportunities in the acting industry, Philipps took it upon herself to reinvent her image and her career. Now, she’s a social media phenom, and her one million Instagram followers get an unfiltered look into her everyday life, including intimate and raw moments.

It’s not rare for Philipps to cry and be emotionally honest on camera, relating to millions of people with anxiety and health issues.

Of course, there are plenty of happy, funny, and honestly weird moments, like when she got a sunburn on her eyeballs during a photoshoot! If her Instagram stories are any indication, Philipps’s show will be a unique one that resonates with millions of viewers.

Will Busy Philipps revolutionize the late night talk show industry? Probably not. But she will be part of a step towards the right direction in creating a diverse landscape in late night comedy on television.
