Look of the Week: Stripes

Stripes have been in style for decades and we have a feeling they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. This classic print makes the perfect graphic statement and can be paired with everything from tulle and leather to polka dots and gingham.

Here are some of our favorite ways bloggers have styled stripes:

Current Obsession: Culottes

Culottes. Love them or hate them, we just can’t say no to a good old-fashioned styling challenge, especially when it involves a match-up with the widely forecasted “it” trouser of 2015. So take note as we break down how to wear these pants-meet-skirt pieces with ease.

White and Black Pinstripe CulottesYou’ll notice culottes have been modernized since the not-so-cute gaucho trend in the early 2000’s. They’ve been given a higher waist, pleats in front and a straighter leg. Above are Pinstripe Culottes available in stores now, $32.50.

With embroidered sweatshirtPair these vertically striped ankle-length pants with your favorite embroidered sweatshirt in winter.

With a crop top Or throw on a blousy top to create volume.

White Maxi TunicIf layering is more your thing, then grab our Pleat-Back Maxi Tunic,$28.50, and layer away! Culottes look great with longer silhouettes cascading down them– just add heels to add some height to your look.

with a pop of redSince we’re closing in on warmer weather, I added some stripes on top in a smaller print. Tip: When you mix stripes, always make sure to wear the bigger stripe on your bottom half and the smaller stripe on top. Add a red cardigan for a pop of color and you’re all set for spring!

I will most definitely be trying this trend this year, will you? Let us know how you style your culottes in the comment section below!

Pastel accessories

This spring I’m playing a lot with monochromatic pastels. Above I added a peach colored split-side sweater and our Spinning Blue Necklace ($10.50). To finish the look, I picked up this pastel blue crossbody with lucite handles.

Parisian twist

red and black accessiriesIn this look, I went for a classic Parisian twist with our Double Layer Striped Blouse, $26.50 and in stores now. Then I replaced the expected beret with a red beanie and added my favorite black pumps.

chambray

We all love a denim shirt, but this season try our Boxy Chambray Blouse, $28.50. Just add a cute bow-tie and messenger bag!

We’re Mad About Stripes

It’s really that simple. We love stripes and want to know one thing: how do you style your stripes? Miranda Valentine of Everything Sounds Better in French introduced us to the nautical-girly look a few weeks ago. Do you like Late Afternoon’s bright red stripes, a traffic-stopping striped dress, or more subtle slim stripes worn under a sweater? And what about B. Jones Style’s fearless color blocking or Brooklyn Blonde’s pattern mixing?  For a chance to win  a $100 gift certificate, show us your stripes! Either upload a photo to our Facebook page or try a YouTube video instead.

Also, our comment contest is still going full speed. Just comment on any blog post and you’ll be entered to win a $25 gift certificate. There’s a new winner selected every week!

Miranda Valentine: Ahoy, Sailor Contest!

How do you style your stripes? The lovely Ms. Miranda Valentine of Everything Sounds Better in French shows us how she likes to wear hers, and I’m absolutely charmed by the nautical-girly mix she pulls off so perfectly. But that’s just how Miranda chose to do it – what about you? Take a photo or video of yourself in your best stripes, upload to YouTube or our Facebook page, and you’ll be entered to win a $100 Crossroads gift certificate. The contest lasts until 5/23, so hurry!

While you’re at it, don’t forget about our comment contest! Every comment on our blog enters you to win a $25 gift certificate, so the more you comment, the more chances you have to win. Congratulations to last week’s winner, Chelsea, for telling us what she thought about looking like a giant cowboy boot. We select a new winner every week, so keep in touch!

Jump Into Fall

Q: What do I wear with a jumper?

A: Jumpers are such a cute look for fall! Start with a wool one and then add a cap-sleeve blouse, long sleeve plaid shirt, or turtleneck.  Stripes are hot right now, so I love the striped sweater option below.

And think outside of the box with this piece. You can wear a cropped jacket to give it a whole new look.  Or, add bright leggings and ballet flats.  Anyway you slice it, you’ll look adorable!

The items below will arrive in all Crossroads stores next week.*

All merchandise is new.  Paul Frank wool jumper, $27.50; Paul Frank sweater, $22.50; Forever 21 bow jacket, $17.50.

*Excluding out outlet store in Stockton.
