Best of The Week

The exciting thing about working at Crossroads is seeing how recycling fashion really works. Because we buy from our customers, the stuff we have in our stores is constantly changing. As one person lets go of a pair of shoes they never wear, another person happily picks them up. It’s green and gorgeous at its finest.

That said, here are some of the beautiful pieces that arrived in our stores across the country this week. Some may have already found happy new owners, but I bet some are still waiting just for you. Personally, I’m going gaga for those delicious Docs and that Betsey Johnson dress!

The Boys Club

Menswear isn’t just for the boys – in fact, who said it ever has been? Katharine Hepburn, with her slacks and button ups, always knew it, and the ladies of today are taking a cue from her as well as from the guys. There’s a fine line between pulling off menswear and simply looking like a dude. And since it’s man month, we’d like to examine it a little closer. Menswear on women, done correctly, is instantly effortlessly chic. The key is to mix feminine pieces and principles of dressing with common menswear pieces: slacks, button-ups, oxfords, blazers and sweaters.

1. Try menswear pieces in feminine colors. Menswear doesn’t have to  be drab colors! Oh and +1 for the cutest clutch ever.

2. …and with that, girl-up a menswear outfit with sparkly extras like jewelry or a nice handbag. A cute printed scarf goes a long way too.3. Stick with flattering materials. I like this outfit because the soft color as well as material of the top is very feminine and flattering to her in both color and silhouette.  Her top half looks entirely feminine even though she is wearing a button up, which people commonly associate with menswear. The bottom half of the outfit is entirely boy, making the whole thing entirely perfect. Well played.

4. No matter what style you’re going for, make sure the fit flatters your body type.  Ashley Olsen looks so casual and yet so put together here because even as her outfit is simple, it fits her as if it were tailored for her – but the same time, her top isn’t uncomfortably snug or awkwardly oversized.

5. Printed pants are everywhere this season, and I like how this young lady paired her menswear-esque jacket with some on point polka dot pants. Don’t be afraid to mix trends and classics. There’s nothing wrong with wearing a blazer with some trousers and a printed floral top, for example.

6. If all else fails – heels, of course.

We challenged a few of our stores to show us their menswear for women

…and our Santa Cruz store assembled an entire outfit just to show you:  Blazer by Villager size L $9.50,  Tank by Silence + Noise size L $11.50, Tie trouser by Gap size 3/4 $14.00,  Bag by Dooney and Bourke $45.00,  Shoes by Cole Haan size 7.5 $15.00, New merchandise dagger necklace $10.50

And a close up of those super cute Cole Haan shoes,  size 7.5 $15.00

Costume National size 5/6 $37.50 at West Hollywood CrossroadsFerragamo size 7.5, $65 at West Hollywood Crossroads

So what do you think? I’m feeling inspired, personally. Do you love it, hate it, or have to try it?

Items of the Week: Lincoln Park Crossroads

When the Lincoln Park Crossroads in Chicago sent in these photos of their items of the week, naturally, I was eager to share. Whether you’re looking for a glitzy night-on-the-town dress or sweet summer dress for a Sunday afternoon, clearly there’s a lot of great shopping at the Lincoln Park Crossroads. Not only are our staff terrific at what they do, they’re also great models and stylists! I love the patterned bag Leah chose to wear with that Diane Von Furstenberg number, giving her outfit a pattern-mixing element without being completely off the wall. Those purple suede shoes add the girly factor to Laura’s otherwise so-fierce outfit, and Leslie looks ready for the fields – picnic fields, that is – with a coral dress accompanied by the sweetest neckline and belt. Well done, ladies!

Opening, check. Helping customers, check. Mini-photoshoot with the week’s glamorous hauls, check. Our Santa Monica staff takes five to bring you a few items they have in store right now that they absolutely love. And honestly, what’s not to love? Nicole looks ridiculously street chic as she models a gorgeous beige leather bag placed perfectly with a Theory black blazer and a Forever 21 tie dye dress. Those Charles David boots would be mine if they weren’t 3 sizes too small and 374 miles away (minor details!). Fortunately, bags are one size fits all, right?

Colors! We’re so excited about them for spring and West San Carlos does them proud by flaunting killer combos in bold brights: blue and emerald; red and yellow – we like. And that’s not to mention the mental note we just made about accenting on-trend light pinks with a cheery yellow belt.

If you find it hard to pick a favorite outfit from these three, join the club, but try your best and leave a comment when you do.

trendspotting: classic bags

marc jacobs classic bag celine

It doesn’t really matter if you’re talking about movies or clothes, classics stay loved for a reason: Timeless beauty.

So, while chances are there will never be another Audrey Hepburn, I’m happy to see a resurgence of classic bags on some leading ladies’ arms and on the runway. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always have a place in my heart for studs and fringe for notice-me flare, but most days I just need something that looks unarguably great while getting the job done.

With just the right amount of special details, neutral colors, and always quality materials and construction, a classic bag will never let you down whenever you pick it up.

As always, let us know what you think – last week’s blog comment contest winner was Gladys Wu and she’s getting a shiny $25 gift certificate. So if you have thoughts on retiring your logo bag or “It” item and swapping it for the Marc Jacobs at Irving St. San Francisco, now’s your chance to tell us below.

trendspotting: go for gold

metallic gold trend kate mossWhether you want to wear it or carry it, metallic gold accents are illuminating fall fashion.

Wearing a slinky tank under your black blazer like Kate Moss is perfect for going out. Or sling a shining carry-all over your arm with neutral looks. Just remember, keeping an outfit understated is best if you’re going to add any metallic piece to the mix, like this warm Botkier bag at Wicker Park Chicago.

So are you swooning for the golden glow? Share your thoughts in the comment section and you could be the next winner of our weekly $25 gift certificate giveaway.

Crossroads Style: Sarah Jessica Parker

Oh, SJP. Even when you’re not in full-on, done-up, Carrie Bradshaw outfits, you’re always bringing style to the table. At your most relaxed, you’re still coordinating accessories and fighting the cold with femininity. Kudos! And man does your son look adorable.

So here’s to you, Sarah Jessica. And to cute extras with punchy details to keep you looking. Our Arden Way store definitely salutes you.

Crossroads Loves…

bottega veneta cole haan woven bag

The texture of these bags! Seriously. Talk about luxe. And we love the differences between them too: Ultra-feminine red patent or understated chocolate from Bottega Veneta?

Evanston has both in case you need to see ‘em in person to make up your mind. ;)

Crossroads Style: Hilary Duff & Leighton Meester

hilary duff leighton meester button up true religion

Depending where you live, fall could mean pulling on your jeans again or…just wearing what you’ve been wearing all summer. Either way, your wardrobe needs a button-up shirt or two.

We love the belted outfit Hilary Duff wears and Leighton Meester goes oversize for a casual shirt-dress. Our Wicker Park Chicago team pulled out a fun detailed version, plus everything else you’d need to go with it for a little style inspiration no matter what weather you’re dressing for.
