The 5 Other Items Every Girl Needs in Her Closet

You’ve heard it before. Every girl needs a little black dress, dark denim dressy jeans, a well-fitting blazer, blah, blah, blah. I don’t want to waste your time telling you what you already know, so let’s talk about five items that always seem to be missing from those lists. They may seem too simple to be necessities or not just your cup of tea, but these pieces can help bridge many wardrobe gaps and can be styled in an infinite number of ways.

1. Sheer Maxi Skirt. A one of the biggest trends of 2011, I’m a large proponent of giving your sheer maxi skirt a permanent place in your closet and in your heart. Why: The long length and sheer material can lend itself to formal events, but if styled correctly can also be completely casual. Opt for one with no attached lining because it can look like a totally different skirt depending on what you layer under it – a full length skirt for a more put together look, a mini for a more casual look, or even a pair of denim shorts (cue the latest Free People catalog) for a music festival look. You can even try a patterned skirt. Alternatively: If you don’t like the floor length look, a sheer midi can do the trick too.2. Light Military Jacket. Believe it or not, nothing gets more play in my closet than my military jacket. Why: It’s that moment when you’re about to head out the door for a coffee date with some girlfriend and you realized you’re too dressed up. You were going for ladylike but ended up first lady (love you, Mrs. O. but you know what I mean).  Throw this piece on to tone down the look in a most fashion-forward manner. Layer it under a blazer for just a peek, or you can even button it up, roll up the sleeves, and belt it to pretend it’s a shirt. Alternatively: There’s no alternative for this sweet piece.

3. Plaid shirt. An easy find, a plaid shirt is an easy way to update your look and it transcends all seasons and trends. Why: This simple, never-going-away pattern is great for pattern mixing when paired with a floral skirt but is equally great with a a tweed coat.  The collar and buttons lend themselves to layering under and over other items. In neutral colors, plaid will go a long way in your wardrobe, but a fun red or orange plaid packs some punch. Alternatively: If plaid is too lumberjack-meets-Kurt-Cobain for you, a classic gingham can work to the same effect.

4. Blue Button Up: You don’t already own this? Why: How many tops can you wear for work and play? This staple goes either way. You can giggle in glee when you realize you’re wearing the same shirt you wore to an interview at a pumpkin patch. Alternatively: A gray button up has almost the same effect, though I think no color lends itself 50/50 like a nice light blue.5. Statement necklace. Whether a choker or a long strand pendant (ideally one of each), a statement necklace of some sort is a must-have for every lady. Why: To dress up the aforementioned little black dress, dark denim jeans, the button up, and even the military jacket and plaid shirt. A good statement necklace can be the deciding factor of what you want your outfit to say. It can be worn more often than you think, so be sure to get one that you are comfortable wearing forever, all the time. Call it your signature. Alternatively: Not a necklace person? The right chandelier earrings can do this too!

New Jewelry: Pile On the Pretty

You get dressed in the morning and put on a necklace. With complete disregard to the old saying, “Take off one accessory before exiting,” you put on a few rings. You’re almost out the door before you take one last look at yourself, this time in front of the mirror next to the door. You look at your neckline, and instead of removing the necklace, you realize you forgot one. Or four. However many, we think it’s okay – that’s the beauty of the necklace pile. These pretty little suckers will be at all Crossroads stores in just a few days. Pile away.

12 Stocking Stuffer Ideas

Yes, it’s the thought that counts, but a well thought out gift speaks volumes, whereas another novelty coffee mug says “I bought this from Target yesterday after my piano lesson, but before I finished my history essay.” I’m sure you’d like to give meaningful gifts to each of your  loved ones, but if you’re like me you find it far easier (and exponentially more enjoyable) to shop for yourself. Fortunately, I did all the studying for you, and I have your answer key right here. This is not a test. This is my collection of fun, quirky and cute gifts for everyone on your list. Enjoy and be merry.

1. Camera Lens Mugs. All professional photographers have one of these babies, of course. These extremely realistic looking lens-mugs are a great way to consume coffee and an even better way to confuse your co-workers. I prefer the Canon version naturally, but they’re available in Nikon as well, and they come with a faux lens cap. Get this for your camera-obsessed friend. $24 and $30 at Photojojo.2. Over the knee knit socks. Remember when socks were that lame gift your aunt got you? Trust me, no one will be complaining if you gifted them with a pair of comfy, knit over the knee socks in a cute striped patterned. A pair of plain knee highs will keep your conservative friend happy too. $15.50 and $14 at all Crossroads stores in a few days.

3. Kate Spade iPhone case. There’s something about a fashionable lady that makes it physically impossible for her to stop dropping her iPhone. Maybe it’s because she’s trying to hold her glitter clutch and Starbucks cup at the same time. Help a lady out, whether she be your bestie or your boss. $40 by Kate Spade.4. Level Necklace. We like utilitarian jewelry a lot here at Crossroads…as well as necklaces with long chains and gold. This level necklace is an awesome gift for…me. Okay, or your sister. $16.50 at all Crossroads stores in the next few days.

5. Lapis of Luxury by Essie. Everyone forgets about mom! I remember when my brother and I were kids, every birthday or holiday seemed to bring my mom a new rice cooker. We were naturally clueless kids, and  we had an unnaturally clueless dad. Stuff your mom’s stocking with things that she can actually enjoy. The smile won’t be fake.  $8 by Essie.6. Scrabble magnet set. Who needs alphabet magnets when you can have Scrabble magnets? This is a good gift for you brother with the questionable music taste but excellent book taste. $14 at Urban Outfitters.

7. Beaded earrings. Everyone has that boho friend that is so hard to buy for. She doesn’t feel comfortable unless she’s in some crushed velvet leggings and piles and piles of necklaces. One up the rest of her friends with these beaded earrings. $12 at all Crossroads stores in the next few days.

8. iWatchz Wrist Strap for iPod Nano. You and your boyfriend can never seem to agree on his wardrobe, but this utilitarian yet stylish wristband will satisfy his need to get some practical use out of everything. You pick the color that you like best, and he can tell time and listen to music all at once. It’ll be the closest he’ll ever get to multitasking. $24.95 at Amazon.

9. Jonathan Rice’s “Trouble is Real” Album on CD. CDs in and of themselves are almost vintage, and Jonathan Rice (aka Jenny Lewis’s boyfriend) released this album back in 2005…meaning this is almost vintage music in an almost vintage format. Almost. If anything it’ll be an unexpected surprise to your co-worker to get a CD, especially a debut album this good. $9.38 at Amazon.10. Mustache and Beard Lolllipops. There is not much more fun than pretending to have a mustache…and then eating it. You know what makes this gift even better? You can get a pack of 12 for just $5. Mustaches for all! 12 for $5 at Oriental Trading.

11. The Writing’s On This Ring. The inscriptions on this ring really appeal to my Egyptian side, even though they’re not hieroglyphics. Give this to…anyone, actually. $9.50 at all Crossroads Stores in the next few days.12. L.A.M.B. Bag or Wallet. I’m very keen on gift wrap. I like the idea of using an actual handbag as a giftbag, and then filling it with more giftables for a very special friend, probably your future sister-in-law…the one that doesn’t know it yet. If the bag’s too much then I’m sure a L.A.M.B. wallet will suffice, no? $250 and $95 at Irving St Crossroads.

Shiny Giftables

It’s that time again…a new set of shiny giftables are heading to all Crossroads stores as we speak and will be arriving in the next few days. I’m embracing holiday spirit by gifting one of each of these babies…to myself. Doesn’t that count?

The Big Bone Theory

You may not be hip to this season’s latest trends, and while we like to try them, that’s a-okay. No color blocking for you? No problem. We can all agree that the foolproof (and cheapest) way to alter your closet starts with your jewelry box. Let a statement necklace do the talking. The newest batch of Crossroads jewelry is smart, hip, and a little boho,  including a watch necklace with viewable working parts in the back, a low hung disk necklace, and tribal inspired pieces featuring faux  bones. And for your viewing pleasure, they will be arriving at all Crossroads stores in the next few days. Feel free to judge me on my book collection and living room decor…coffee table book not included with purchase!

Your Cup of Tea

Semi-precious teacups? Whereas our last batch of jewelry was cute and utilitarian, the latest little shinies to hit all Crossroads stores in the next few days are sweet and dainty. For instance, this darling little white teacup ring. Not your cup of tea? How about a charming fool’s gold locket? Also heading to you soon are two bottle necklaces with little colored rice bits instead. It’s just the kind of color your (read: my) monochrome outfit needs…shaken, not stirred.

But hey, before you scroll on down, let me let you in on a little secret – we’re giving away this teacup ring this week. All you have to  do is comment on this blog, on any post you like. When Sam from our corporate buying team told me I could give our blog viewers a sneak peak at our new jewelry, I didn’t realize that the end result would be a shopping trip for myself. Just in time for summer, these beauties will be hitting all of our stores this week – plus some more, because I had to leave some to your imaginations! Personally, I had trouble containing myself. The arrow necklaces would just look amazing over a simple, flowy white top, wouldn’t they? We also have the cutest cuff bracelet coming to you, and a bejeweled multi-strand necklace that I have simply dubbed “the awesome necklace,” as per my notes. In the end, I was modest and took home “the awesome necklace” and the bird skull ring. What strikes your fancy?

Don’t forget about our comment contest! When you  comment on any blog post, you’ll be entered into a weekly raffle for $25 dollars…which means some of these babies could be yours for free.
