After another hot and humid summer, we’re excited for the weather to finally cool down. Fall is here, and what do you do when the weather starts to get chilly? Warming your hands in front of the heater is one option, but our favorite is having a handful of outerwear pieces to get you through those brisk fall days.
Here are six key fall outerwear pieces you should pick up this fall!
1. With a classic olive green utility jacket and a scarf, you’re set for any and all fall outings this season.
2. Recreate this look with a suede biker jacket and a plain white t-shirt.
3. When the weather is colder than usual, slip into a long and cozy shearling jacket. Tone down the teddy-bear look by pairing it with some simple black clothing as your foundation.
4. Nothing says fall quite like a rust-colored cardigan!
5. Trench coats are always a classic fall staple. They’re universally flattering, come in a variety of patterns, and–best of all—can instantly elevate an outfit.
6. The best thing about bomber jackets is that they’re incredibly versatile and can be worn in any season. For your next brunch out with your gal pals, go casual in bomber jacket paired with your favorite skinny jeans.
There’s a lot to get excited about when it comes to spring fashion at Crossroads. Fun prints, brighter colors, and for the second year in a row, our three favorite trends are reappearing at all locations nationwide. Here’s a first look at select pieces and trends from our new collection, coming spring 2017.
Off-the-Shoulder: The Silhouette of the Season
Off-the-Shoulder has officially crossed over from trend of the moment to wardrobe mainstay.
Culottes are great year-round, but this spring they’ll be back in the spotlight due to their versatility.
From weekend-ready knits to polished evening alternatives, culottes can do it all. You’ll find them pleated, with an oversized leg, and even hiding under a skort this season. Our Denim Culottes Skort ($48.50) is a win-win for all you 2-in-1 lovers out there. Dress culottes up for work or keep it more casual on the weekend—they’re the epitome of a versatile wardrobe essential.
This season’s jackets don’t just finish an outfit, they define it.
Make sure your jacket game is strong. Whether you delve into embroidered accents or bold prints, make sure you make a statement this season with your outerwear. Our Mirror Print Bomber ($42.50) will finish off any spring look with a bang.
All items are new and available at all Crossroads locations! Stay tuned here for a first look at our new arrivals.
When it comes to winter, the question on every fashionista’s mind is: fashion or function? We don’t know about you, but we’re going to invest in a shearling coat that has both.
Throw on your shearling trims and aviators, because we’re going all out this winter with our favorite bloggers to inspire us:
As demonstrated by Fake Leather, a shearling trim jacket can be styled with anything and still be fashion forward—a dress included! If you’re looking to stay a bit warmer, add on a pair of nude or black tights.
Is it 65 degrees outside but you still want an excuse to wear your new shearling coat? Fake it ‘til you make it! Wear a minidress under your shearling, bundle up in a scarf and beanie, pull on some over-the-knee suede boots and achieve that “it’s kinda winter” look.
The great thing about shearling coats is that there are so many versatile styles to choose from. A black coat with tan cuffs looks great with a striped top or graphic tee. Slip on a miniskirt with tights and you have the perfect winter outfit!
There’s something so aesthetically pleasing about the way long layers look underneath a shearling coat. Add dimension to your outfit by styling oversized knit sweaters with your coat.
Karen Smith once said “In winter, we wear black.” Or she would have said it if Mean Girls was filmed in 2016, we’re pretty sure. Recreate this minimalistic look by wearing a black shearling coat and layering it with all black essentials.
A classic camel-colored shearling coat is a timeless piece that you’ll be glad you invested in. Pull off this easy look by wearing your coat over an ivory sweater and a simple pair of black jeans and accenting your outfit with a colorful clutch.
Secondhand stores like Crossroads can be overwhelming, even for veteran thrifters. Making a plan of what you’re looking for beforehand can save you some anxiety, but don’t expect to find everything in the first store you walk into. The magic of shopping a secondhand store is the possibility of finding unique pieces from a brand you may never have discovered otherwise, or brand-name pieces you love but can’t justify purchasing at original price.
I want you to love the adventure of thrifting as much as I do, so I’ve put together a guide to the best secondhand bargains to spend your energy on!
The first thing I look at when walking into a recycled fashion or secondhand store is the shoe selection. I scan all sizes because brands fit differently and shoes often get moved and put back incorrectly throughout the day. It is not uncommon to find like new or brand new, unworn, and high-end shoes that are already broken in for less than half of the original price.
Coats and Jackets
Living in Los Angeles, there are only a couple of months in the year that a coat is necessary, so I often find it hard to justify the high price of a new one. Coats are an item that I have not paid full price for in years. I’ve been able to find everything from a vintage, oversized denim jacket to a never worn, trendy duster coat.
While I still shop good-quality fast fashion brands like Forever 21, H&M, and Urban Outfitters at secondhand stores, the best bargains will be with high-quality brand name labels. The prices will be significantly lower than the original. And at buy-sell-trade stores, they’ll only be slightly used or, in some cases, brand new with the tags still attached!
I like to keep on top of clothing trends, but I definitely do not buy into all of them. New, trendy pieces can be expensive because of the high demand. Trends tend to come in cycles, so you may be lucky enough to find current trends at a secondhand store from the previous cycle. I personally think the original run of the trend is always best; for example, vintage Levi’s will forever be favored over newly manufactured copycat “mom jeans.”
Does anyone really enjoy shopping for new denim? Finding the right size for you depends on the brand, the cut, the shape, and the style of the jeans (or jacket). For me, the worst part is how the denim’s shape changes after a few wears or washes. Finding a perfectly worn-in pair of jeans or a denim jacket at a secondhand store will guarantee that the fit in the dressing room will be the fit for life!
Winter style is all about one thing: the coat. A coat can make or break your outfit this winter, so don’t just throw on any old one! There are plenty of stylish and warm options this season. Check out my round-up for inspiration on how to style winter coats so that they become part of your outfit without overpowering it.
Puffer Coats & Vests
The puffer coat has gone from an outcast in the fashion world to one of the coolest layers on the runway. Pair it with opposing fabrics and textures and slimmer-fitting bottoms.
Shearling and Shaggy Coats
Add some texture to your winter coat for a bit of rock and roll glam. Pair your big, shaggy coat with complimentary or monochromatic colors.
Wrap coats can be bulky, but paired with a sleek outfit, they are downright chic.
Anorak and Parka Jackets
With the right details—like leather or a fur lining or a chic slim fit—a warm parka can add instant style to your winter outfit.
