Celebrating 35 Years of Fashion

Take a stroll down memory lane with us, and see how we’ve made resale easy since 1991.

The 90s

In 1991, the year Nirvana’s Nevermind brought grunge from Seattle to the world, Crossroads opened its very first doors in San Francisco. The decade that followed brought big change: the World Wide Web went public, Friends defined Thursday nights, and the Spice Girls made pop culture louder than ever.

After San Francisco, we opened new stores in Sacramento (1992), the Castro in San Francisco (1993), Oakland (1994), San Jose (1995), and Berkeley (1998). In 1996, we headed north and opened our first store outside California in Seattle. In 1999, we closed out the decade with our first Southern California store on Melrose Ave. in Hollywood.

Fashion moved just as fast. Check out the fashion we were buying that decade.

The 2000s

The new millennium arrived with Y2K jitters, the first iPod, and the rise of social media, with MySpace and Facebook changing how we connected. Fashion followed the same fast pace: tube tops and low-rise jeans gave way to Ugg boots, boho dresses, skinny jeans, and ballet flats, while trucker hats and Juicy Couture track suits defined the early years.

Crossroads kept growing. We opened new stores in Santa Cruz (2001) and West Hollywood (2002). 2003 brought three openings: Sacramento, Studio City, and Irving Street in San Francisco. In 2004, our Santa Monica location opened. In 2005 we opened two stores in Chicago, our first Midwest locations, along with our first Orange County store. Evanston and a second San Jose store came in 2006. In 2008, we opened our second Seattle location and new stores in Portland and Silver Lake.

The 2010s

The decade began with the first iPad, and Instagram arrived soon after to change how we shared everything, outfits included. Secondhand was becoming a first choice for more shoppers.

Crossroads grew far beyond the West Coast. We opened in Pasadena and Santa Barbara in 2010, then in 2011 made the long trip across the country and opened our first store in Brooklyn. In 2012 we added a second Portland location and stores in Los Feliz and Orange County. We expanded our brand and opened our sister store Fillmore & 5th in 2012. We also opened in Manhattan (2013), Houston (2016), and Huntington Beach (2018).

The 2020s

The decade opened with a world that stayed home, and TikTok turned bedrooms into runways. Fashion started cozy with sweatsets, bucket hats, and puff-sleeve dresses, then burst back out with Y2K revivals, corsets, and low-rise denim. More recently, quiet luxury basics, barrel-leg jeans, rugby shirts, and jorts have taken over. Secondhand shopping is more popular than ever, and what’s old is new again.

Crossroads kept growing, from Culver City to new frontiers. In 2022, we opened our first store in Denver, and we also welcomed new neighbors in the West Village, East Village, and Echo Park. As we celebrate 35 years, we’re proud that the Crossroads community keeps growing right along with us.
