Blog: Crossroads Style

May 13th, 2016 by Samantha Weaver Meet Denny, Our Newest Style Council Member!

We’re very excited to welcome Denny Balmaceda to our Style Council! If you aren’t already one of his 90k+ followers, then listen up—because Denny may as well have invented the #ootd. He is one of the best style influencers to follow on Instagram.
 –
Denny firmly believes in the difference between fashion and style:  Fashion is temporary; fashion is a race. Style is independent of that. Style is storytelling.
–Because of his ability to tell a story through style, ten minutes can easily turn into ten hours on any one of Denny’s platforms. Whether you’re scrolling through his blog or his Instagram feed, you’ll find yourself inspired by his artistry, musical vibes, and, of course, his personal style.

We can relate to Denny’s fashion philosophy: “‘Look rich, shop cheap,’ will forever be my motto. Regardless of success or life changes, I have some of the best times when I am thrifting. When buying, selling, or trading clothes, I can always rely on @crossroads_east in Manhattan to find the most unique pieces.”
 –
We can’t wait to see what Denny finds next at Crossroads! If you’re in the New York area, make sure to check out his favorite Crossroads location in the Flatiron District. After checking out his website and Insta feed, we’re sure you’ll enter the store with lots of style inspiration.

Welcome to the Crossroads Style Council, Denny! We love sharing your looks and spreading the word that you’re one of the best style influencers to follow.

May 9th, 2016 by Samantha Weaver DIY: Frayed Hem Jeans

The moment I saw 3×1’s Crop Lima jeans, I knew I had to have them—but with a $295 price tag, I set out to create my own affordable version. I closed my web browser, picked up my seam rippers, and ran to the Crossroads DIY Studio to create these frayed hem jeans myself!

First things first: you can use any pair of jeans to achieve this fringed accent. I’ll be using a pair of light-wash skinny jeans, but you can use any color or silhouette you want.

You will need:

– A pair of jeans

– A seam ripper

– A pair of sharp scissors

– A ruler

1. Cut the bottoms off your jeans with scissors.

2. Use your seam ripper to open up the vertical seam on both sides of each leg. You can use a ruler to measure the length of your fringe. I went with a whopping six inches for an extra long fringe!

3. Now you can start fraying! You can use your fingers to rub the edges of the fabric to find your loose vertical threads. Then just start unraveling. I used the seam ripper to isolate each thread, pulling them out one by one.The entire process should only take about an hour to unravel both legs up to your desired height.

4. Finish with a run through the washer and dryer. Then twist the fringe between your thumb and index finger creating chunks of denim-y fringe!

Here’s a finished pair. I added some stitching to keep the fringe from unraveling beyond my original measurement.

Light wash or dark wash, this fun DIY is an easy and free route to transforming last season’s jeans into this summer’s hottest denim trend.

April 29th, 2016 by Samantha Weaver Styling Session: Summer Stripes

We love this Riviera-ready look that Amelia of Clotheshorse LA put together so much, that she (and those amazing pants) immediately became the inspiration for styling summer stripes from our closet!

Because this week’s newest arrivals feature so many fantastic stripes, I picked my favorites and headed straight to the styling closet. You can look forward to shopping for striped pieces similar to these at all Crossroads locations.

Our simple Striped Crop Top ($9.50) is the perfect place to start. Pair this 100% cotton tee with high-waisted shorts and platform sandals, and finish off the look with a brightly colored purse.

Add a pop of red with our Mini Stripe Collared Tank ($16.50). I upped the cute factor by adding a black bow tie and cherry red bag.

Go neutral with our ‘70s Striped Tunic ($18.50). Achieve this look with light wash jeans, a pastel tote, and minimal flats.

When the temperature climbs into the hundreds, you’ll want our High Neck Striped Tank ($9.50) handy. Just add your trusty denim cut-offs and let your brightest sandals complete the look.

Amelia makes styling summer stripes look easy, and we hope our looks have inspired you to give this look a try too!

April 11th, 2016 by Melanie Sutrathada 4 Gorgeous Festival Hairstyles

Festival season is officially upon us, and whether you’re headed to Coachella or watching from home, you’ll want a hairstyle that’s both gorgeous and functional. Chances are, you’ll be dancing and sweating up a storm, so effortless beauty is a must when considering festival hairstyles!

Here are my favorite ways to style your hair for the season’s music festivals.

1. The Messy Braidfestival hairstyles
Throw together a traditional French braid and gently loosen up your strands before securing your ‘do with a clear elastic. For extra texture, spray a dry shampoo into your roots and massage it in with your fingers. This is one of my favorite styles to master for a long weekend!

2. The Half Updofestival hairstyles
Feature full waves and tons of volume while keeping your hair out of your face by pulling the top half of your hair back.

3. The Milkmaid BraidP3-Milkmaid-Braid

Looking to keep your hair off your face and your neck? The milkmaid braid is perfect for sweaty weather.

4. The TopknotP4-Top-Knot
Go uber chic and sophisticated with a sleek bun at the very top of your head, or go relaxed and effortless with a loose and messy topknot. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

April 8th, 2016 by Jennifer Beile Vinyl: The Series Every Fashionista Should Be Watching

If you haven’t been watching the new HBO show Vinyl, block out your weekend for some serious bingeing. The music industry-based show is not only written well, its ’70s era fashion is downright enviable, especially in a time when the resurgence of these trends can’t ignored.

Vinyl has been a style inspiration since the series premiere in February, and it’s no wonder why. The show’s costume designer, John Dunn, who has previously worked on shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire (both with perfect vintage styling too), has recreated the era’s fashion with brilliant execution; the looks are gritty, glamorous, and rebelliously rock and roll. You can learn more about how Dunn has been able to revive the ’70s for HBO here and here.

Check out my top 10 favorite looks from the series so far!
